The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the world’s largest motorcycle gathering, held annually for 10 days during the first week of August in Sturgis, South Dakota, and the surrounding Black Hills. It attracts roughly 500,000 riders for scenic rides, stunt shows, racing, and massive outdoor concerts.

History & Origins

Origin: Founded in 1938 by Clarence "Pappy" Hoel and the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club as a small racing event with just nine riders and 200 spectators.

Evolution: What started as a local dirt-track race has blossomed into a multi-generational cultural phenomenon with an annual economic impact of nearly $800 million on the state.
